The publisher recommends Pilot as a starting point and describes Rookie, Pilot, Veteran and Elite settings that can be changed during play. Veteran raises enemy challenge and restricts damage recovery; Elite demands sharper decisions. Start lower if you cannot learn the objective between failures, and keep rank comparisons on the same difficulty.

Choose for the obstacle
| Setting | Useful reason to choose |
|---|---|
| Rookie | Learn flight and objectives with the available assistance |
| Pilot | Publisher-recommended starting challenge |
| Veteran | Stronger opposition and damage-recovery restrictions |
| Elite | More demanding decisions and execution |
The September guide also describes a Rookie option to reduce terrain-collision damage. Inspect the actual option before relying on it. These starting descriptions are not a claim that the game has no later Ace option.
Lower difficulty or change controls?
If you cannot turn and recover, practice Standard versus Expert controls. If you can fly but cannot understand which objective is failing, a lower difficulty may give you a more useful learning attempt. If you know the objective and are trying to collect ranks, keep the target difficulty stable.
Write down mission, difficulty, control mode and the failure. Changing all four loadout and input variables at once makes a better result hard to explain. An S report from Veteran should not be used as an Ace threshold.
Planning an Ace run
Steam achievement metadata includes completing the campaign on Ace and earning S across Ace missions, with Free Mission included for the latter condition. It confirms that Ace goals exist; it does not describe an exact menu-unlock procedure.
For collection, use the achievement roadmap and all-S replay guide. If an option is still unavailable in your save, inspect its displayed condition rather than assuming Expert controls unlock it.
